Maki Sushi
Maki Sushi is a design-your-own roll shop in Northern Austin. My roll has a bizarre lime green skin, unagi, asparagus, green onions, and bean sprouts topped with leftover bits of tempura and slathered with spicy mayo. It was actually quite tasty, although a bit on the expensive side. The best thing about Maki Sushi was actually their miso soup, it was rich and buttery with good tofu that tasted like it wasn’t squeezed out of a chemical factory.
You may be thinking, wait a minute, why is he eating a roll, I thought he liked sushi. In the US we don’t eat real sushi because we’re afraid of it. Instead we eat these ridiculous rolls with toppings galore. Our nanny state ensures that we’re never exposed to truly raw fish, everything must be frozen. That’s right, in the US it’s illegal to sell sushi that has never been frozen.
