The number of children in China who take piano lessons > the total number of US children

As fun as that statement is, it’s simply not true.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

According to Music Trades magazine, published in Englewood, N.J., an estimated 40 million children in China take piano lessons, and 50 million study the violin. Piano sales in China - the strongest in the world - amount to 200,000 a year, and could double by 2012.

From the US Census Fact Sheet:

• Under 5 years: 20,385,773
• 5 to 9 years: 19,748,765
• 10 to 14 years: 20,678,265
• 15 to 19 years: 21,697,322
